Home solar lighting circuit
While converting an entire house to solar power is beyond the capability (and certainly finances) of most of us, it's not hard to build a small solar-powered system that runs a lighting circuit, or a few low-powered mains appliances through an inverter.
Damon Hart-Davis has done exactly that, using a Unisolar ES62 solar panels (now unfortunately unavailable) in conjunction with a Morningstar solar regulator. Using a simple relay, the system now also runs his webserver when there is sufficient solar power, dropping back to mains power if the battery voltage begins to drop.
See Damons website for more details of the pilot project and the solar-powered laptop webserver.
