MCS - the Microgeneration Certification Scheme
The Microgeneration Certification Scheme is a government scheme for certifying both products that must be used in installations to qualify for government subsidies (such as the Clean Energy cashback feed-in tariff scheme), and the installers that are allowed to carry out installation work.
What's the point?
The idea is to 'evaluate microgeneration products and installers against robust criteria providing greater protection for consumers', if the official MCS website is to be trusted. In other words, it should prevent shoddy products being used in installations; and (you would hope) it should prevent cowboys from doing the work.
What's the down side?
The down side is that the scheme is a tad bureaucratic, and expensive to join. DIY installations - no matter how good they are - will not be an option. The price you pay for an installation on your house will be higher than if the scheme didn't exist, as companies have to charge more to cover the cost of accreditation.
However, although it is a shame that DIY installations cannot be catered for under the system, the feed-in tariffs are set at a level that do make systems a very attractive proposition anyway!
As accredited installers ourselves, we offer a complete installation service that focuses on a good quality service, good prices, and above all, making it as simple as possible for the customer to get PV installed!
