Using Low voltage Disconnects

Some regulators support a Low Voltage Disconnect (LVD) feature. With LVD terminals, the battery bank is automatically disconnected from appliances when the voltage drops below a set threshold, in order to prevent battery damage. However, you can of course still run appliances directly from the battery terminals if you don't want your lights etc to switch off all of a sudden in the evening as the battery voltage drops!

Low voltage disconnects are generally only used in automated systems such as unattended remote scientific equipment. Where a human is present they tend to make a better job of deciding whether a battery bank is too low or not.
