Sodium ion batteries are the environmentally friendly choice - sodium is abundant and easily extracted from seawater or soda ash, while lithium is scarce, and is often mined or extracted from brines in environmentally sensitive locations such as the Atacama Desert.

Sodium has a number of other advantages over lithium too. While the performance and charging rates of lithium ion batteries drops significantly at cold temperatures (a real problem now that batteries are often installed outside), sodium ion batteries are largely unaffected by temperature and will operate quite happily at -20 degrees.
